Ship Designers, Ship Buildersand Marine
Surveyors) Interim Standard 1996.˙Commencement2.This
standard commences on 1 July 1996.˙Purpose of standard3.Thepurposeofthisstandardistostatehowapersonqualifiesforaccreditation as a ship designer, ship
builder or marine surveyor under theTransport
Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 1995, section
24.1˙Knowledge of
obligations under Act, regulation and standards4.(1)Apersonwhowantstobeaccreditedasashipdesigner,shipbuilder or marine
surveyor must know about—(a)the obligations
imposed on the person by becoming accredited by1Section 24 (Accreditation as a ship

Regulation1995; and(b)the requirements of the appropriate
standards.(2)Sections 5 to 7 set out additional
requirements for each accreditation.˙Ship
designers—specific requirements5.(1)Apersonwhowantstobeaccreditedasashipdesignermusthave—(a)at least 10 years experience;
or(b)at least 5 years experience and 1 of
the following qualifications—(i)a
degree in naval architecture;(ii)an
engineering degree with a major in naval architecture;(iii)adiploma,associatediplomaorcertificateinnavalarchitecture or
shipbuilding;(iv)other
qualifications the person satisfies the chief executiveareequivalentto,orbetterthan,thosementionedinsubparagraphs (i) to (iii).(2)In subsection (1)—“experience”means
appropriate experience with demonstrated competencein
designing ships of the category for which the accreditation is
sought.˙Ship builders—special
requirements6.(1)A person who
wants to be accredited as a ship builder must have—(a)at least 10 years experience;
or(b)at least 5 years experience and 1 of
the following qualifications—(i)boat
builder;(ii)shipwright;(iii)othertradequalificationsthepersonsatisfiesthechief

those mentioned insubparagraphs (i) and (ii).(2)In subsection (1)—“experience”means
appropriate experience with demonstrated competencein
building ships of the category for which the accreditation is
sought.˙Special requirements—marine
surveyors7.(1)A person who
wants to be accredited as a marine surveyor musthave—(a)at
least 10 years experience; or(b)at
least 5 years experience and 1 of the following
qualifications—(i)a certificate as a class 1 or 2 marine
engineer or master;(ii)a degree in
naval architecture;(iii)a degree in
marine engineering;(iv)adiploma,associatediplomaorcertificateinnavalarchitecture or
shipbuilding;(v)trade qualifications as a
shipwright;(vi)other
educational, sea going or trade qualifications the personsatisfies the chief executive are equivalent
to, or better than,those mentioned in subparagraphs (i) to
(v).(2)In subsection (1)—“experience”means
appropriate experience with demonstrated competenceinsurveyingshipsofthecategoryforwhichtheaccreditationissought.˙Expiry8.This
standard expires 6 months after it commences.
