standard—marine surveyormeans a person
who surveys a ship or part ofa ship.partofashipmeansasectionofthehull,bulkhead,deck,superstructure,electricalsystemsormachinery(includingpropulsion and associated systems) of a
ship.regulationmeans theTransportOperations(MarineSafety)Regulation
2004.ship buildermeans a person
who builds a ship or part of aship.ship
designermeans a person who designs a ship or part of
aship.

20054Purpose of standardThe
purpose of this standard is to state how a person qualifiesforaccreditationasashipdesigner,shipbuilderormarinesurveyor under
section 441of the regulation.5Knowledge of obligations under Act,
regulation andstandards(1)A
person who wants to be accredited as a ship designer, shipbuilder or marine surveyor must know
about—(a)the obligations imposed under the Act
on a person whois accredited as a ship designer, ship
builder or marinesurveyor; and(b)the
requirements of the appropriate standards.(2)Sections6to8setoutadditionalrequirementsforeachaccreditation.6Ship
designers—specific requirements(1)A
person who wants to be accredited as a ship designer musthave—(a)at
least 10 years experience; or(b)atleast5yearsexperienceand1ofthefollowingqualifications—(i)a
degree in naval architecture;(ii)anengineeringdegreewithamajorinnavalarchitecture;(iii)a
diploma, associate diploma or certificate in navalarchitecture;(iv)anotherqualificationthepersonsatisfiesthegeneral manager is equivalent to, or

(i), (ii) or(iii).(2)A
person who wants to be accredited as a ship designer forpart
of a ship must have—(a)1 of the following
qualifications—(i)a trade qualification as an
electrician;(ii)a trade qualification as a marine
fitter;(iii)anotherqualificationthepersonsatisfiesthegeneral manager is equivalent to, or
better than, thequalification mentioned in subparagraph (i)
or (ii);and(b)at least 2 years
post qualification experience.(3)In
this section—experiencemeans—(a)appropriateexperiencewithdemonstratedcompetenceindesigningshipsofthecategoryforwhichtheaccreditation is sought; or(b)a combination of—(i)appropriateexperiencewithdemonstratedcompetence in
designing ships, or parts of ships, ofthe category for
which the accreditation is sought;and(ii)appropriateexperiencewithdemonstratedcompetence in
building ships, or parts of ships, ofthe category for
which the accreditation is sought.7Ship
builders—specific requirements(1)A
person who wants to be accredited as a ship builder musthave—(a)at
least 10 years experience; or(b)atleast5yearsexperienceand1ofthefollowingqualifications—

2005(i)a certificate in ship building;(ii)a trade qualification as a boat
builder;(iii)a trade
qualification as a shipwright;(iv)another trade qualification the person
satisfies thegeneral manager is equivalent to, or better
than, thequalification mentioned in subparagraphs
(i), (ii) or(iii).(2)A
person who wants to be accredited as a ship builder for partof a
ship must have—(a)1 of the following
qualifications—(i)a trade qualification as an
electrician;(ii)a trade qualification as a marine
fitter;(iii)anotherqualificationthepersonsatisfiesthegeneral manager is equivalent to, or
better than, thequalification mentioned in subparagraph (i)
or (ii);and(b)at least 2 years
post qualification experience.(3)In
this section—experiencemeans appropriate
experience with demonstratedcompetenceinbuildingships,orpartsofships,ofthecategory for which the accreditation
is sought.8Marine surveyors—specific
requirements(1)Apersonwhowantstobeaccreditedasamarinesurveyormust
have—(a)at least 10 years experience;
or(b)atleast5yearsexperienceand1ofthefollowingqualifications—

Orders, part32asaMaster,Master(<3000GT)orengineerclass 1 or
2;(ii)a degree in naval architecture;(iii)a degree in
marine engineering;(iv)a diploma, associate diploma or
certificate in navalarchitecture or ship building;(v)atradequalificationasashipwrightorboatbuilder;(vi)anothereducational,seagoingortradequalificationthepersonsatisfiesthegeneralmanagerisequivalentto,orbetterthan,thequalificationmentionedinsubparagraph (i),(ii)(iii), (iv) or (v).(2)A
person who wants to be accredited as a marine surveyor forpart
of a ship must have—(a)a trade qualification as an
electrician; and(b)at least 2 years post qualification
experience.(3)In this section—experiencemeans appropriate
experience with demonstratedcompetenceinsurveyingships,orpartsofships,ofthecategory for which the accreditation
