supervised practice program is aprogramofsupervisionforprobationaryregistrantsthathappensoveraperiodofpracticeoftheprofessionandincludes the requirements set out in this
part.(2)Themainobjectsofthesupervisedpracticeprograminclude—(a)givingprobationaryregistrantsexperiencein,andinstruction about, practising in the
profession; and(b)helpingprobationaryregistrantstodevelopknowledgeabout practising in the profession;

profession—medical imagingtechnology—Act, s 61Practice of the profession for the
supervised practice programfor the medical
imaging technology profession is an activitycarriedoutbyaprobationaryregistrantinvolvingtheproductionofimagesusingionisingradiationandothermodalities to
help in the diagnosis and management of diseaseor injury in
humans.9What is practice of the
profession—nuclear medicinetechnology—Act, s 61Practice of the profession for the
supervised practice programfor the nuclear
medicine technology profession is an activitycarried out by a
probationary registrant involving the use ofunsealed
radioactive compounds and other modalities in thedevelopment and delivery of the following
procedures—(a)imaging and measurement of
physiological processes tohelp in the diagnosis of disease and
injury in humans;(b)palliation or treatment of disease in
humans.10What is practice of the
profession—radiationtherapy—Act, s 61Practice of the
profession for the supervised practice programfor the
radiation therapy profession is an activity carried outbyaprobationaryregistrantinvolvingthedevelopment,implementation
and verification of radiation therapy treatmentplans to
contain, cure or relieve disease in humans.11Practice of the profession generally—Act, s
61(1)Subject to subsection (2), a
probationary registrant practisesthe profession
only while the registrant has a supervisor underthe

12](2)Subsection (1) does not apply to a
period of not more than 28dayswhentheprobationaryregistrantischangingtheregistrant’s supervisor if the registrant
gives the board noticeunder section 16 advising of a change
of supervisors.Division 3Practice under
the supervisedpractice program12Probationary registrant not to be sole
practitionerA probationary registrant must not practise
the profession at aplaceunlessageneralregistrantintheprofessionisattheplace.Maximum penalty—20 penalty units.13Period allowed for completion of the
supervised practiceprogram—Act, s 57For section
57(2)(a)(ii) of the Act, the period is 2 years fromthe
day the registrant is registered as a probationary
registrant.14Minimum period for completion of the
supervisedpractice program—Act, s 61(1)Forsection61(2)(f)oftheAct,theminimumperiodisasfollows—(a)for a probationary registrant
undertaking the supervisedpractice program by working on a

days or less bereavement or sick leave taken during theminimum period;(b)anypublicholidaysoccurringduringtheminimumperiod.(3)Forparagraph(1)(b),ifthenumbercalculatedusingtheformula is not a whole number, the
number of weeks is thenext highest whole number.(4)Toremoveanydoubt,itisdeclaredthatforaprobationaryregistrantundertakingthesupervisedpracticeprogram,theminimum period is 48 weeks even if the
registrant works morethan 38 hours a week.(5)In this section—AHWmeanstheaverageweeklyhoursaprobationaryregistrant works
in the profession.15Probationary registrant to notify
board when starting thesupervised practice program(1)A probationary registrant must, within
28 days of starting thesupervised practice program or a
partial program, notify theboardthattheregistranthasstartedtheprogramorpartialprogram unless

about change ofprofessional practice setting(1)A section 57(2)(a) registrant must,
within 28 days of changingtheprofessionalpracticesettinginwhichtheregistrantisundertaking the supervised practice program,
notify the boardof the change unless the registrant has a
reasonable excuse.Maximum penalty—10 penalty units.(2)The registrant must notify the board
in the approved form.18Probationary
registrants to give board reports(1)A
probationary registrant must give the board a report aboutthe
registrant’s progress and performance in undertaking thesupervised practice program or a partial
program (aprogressreport)atanytimetheboardreasonablyrequirestheregistranttogiveareport,unlesstheregistranthasareasonable excuse.Maximum
penalty—10 penalty units.(2)Also, a section
57(2)(a) registrant must, unless the registranthas a reasonable
excuse, give the board a progress report—(a)6
months after the day the registrant starts the program;and(b)within 6 months
after the last report.Maximum penalty—10 penalty
units.(3)A registrant must give the board a
report under subsection (1)within 28 days
from the day the registrant receives a noticefrom the board
requiring the report unless the registrant has areasonable excuse.(4)A
report under this section must be—(a)in
the approved form; and(b)signed by the

registrant in the medical imaging technologyprofession must,
to complete the supervised practice program,demonstratecompetencytocarryoutgeneralimagingtechniques, including the following—(a)generalandcontrastradiographicexaminationsofthegenito-urinary, respiratory and
skeletal systems and thealimentary tract;(b)paediatric imaging;(c)mobileradiography,includingmobileimageintensification;(d)radiography in the context of an operating
theatre;(e)routine computed tomography;(f)trauma radiography.20Competencies to be demonstrated for
completion ofsupervised practice program—nuclear
medicinetechnology—Act, s 61A probationary
registrant in the nuclear medicine technologyprofession must,
to complete the supervised practice program,demonstrate
competency in the following—(a)undertakingpreparation,dosedispensingandadministration of diagnostic
radiopharmaceuticals;(b)undertakingtherapeuticandradiopharmaceutical dose dispensing;palliative(c)usingasepticlaboratoryskillsforreconstitutingradiopharmaceuticals and labelling blood
products;(d)performingradionuclideplanarimaging,SPECTimaging and ECG-gated imaging in adults and

lungs, skeleton,thyroid and tumours;(e)undertakingdigitaldataanalysis,processingandstorage;(f)usingdosecalibrators,probesandradiationsurveymeters;(g)performingqualitycontrolandqualityassuranceprocedures including—(i)routinequalitycontrolofgammacamera,dosecalibratorsandotherequipmentusedintheprofession; and(ii)quality control of
radiopharmaceuticals;(h)managingpatientcaseloadsandassociatedadministrative
processes.21Competencies to be demonstrated for
completion ofsupervised practice program—radiation
therapy—Act,s 61A probationary
registrant in the radiation therapy professionmust,tocompletethesupervisedpracticeprogram,demonstrate
competency in the following—(a)performingroutineandnon-specialisedproceduresincluding
external beam treatment;(b)undertaking
treatment simulation processes;(c)undertakingtreatmentplanningincludingtheacquisition of patient and imaging
data to —(i)integrate the planning process;
and(ii)provide advice
about the best radiation therapy fora patient;
and(iii)develop a
treatment plan for the patient;(d)implementinga
treatmentplanincollaborationwithaprescribing medical specialist and

general X-ray unit, a mobile X-ray unit with animage

practicesetting—nuclear medicine technology(1)The following diagnostic procedures
must be carried out at aprofessionalpracticesettingforthenuclearmedicinetechnology profession—(a)bone
scans, including 3-phase, whole body and SPECTimaging;(b)cardiacstudiesincludingmyocardialperfusionandECG-gated imaging;(c)lung
scans;(d)renal studies including dynamic and
static imaging;(e)tumour imaging, including, for
example, gallium scans.(2)Aprofessionalpracticesettingforthenuclearmedicinetechnology profession must also allow a
registrant to observe,and assist with, diagnostic procedures
using 1 or more of thefollowing modalities or
techniques—(a)bone mineral densitometry;(b)clean room procedures in a
radiopharmacy;(c)gamma probe;(d)positron emission tomography.(3)Aprofessionalpracticesettingforthenuclearmedicinetechnology profession must also allow a
registrant to observeothermedicalimagingmodalities,including,forexample,generalradiology,magneticresonanceimagingandultrasound.(4)Aprofessionalpracticesettingforthenuclearmedicinetechnology profession must also allow a
registrant to practiseotherdiagnosticimagingproceduresandassistwiththerapeuticproceduresincluding,forexample,thefollowing—(a)cerebral perfusion imaging;(b)endocrineimaging,includingthyroidandparathyroidscans;Page
