commences on 1 March 1998.3DefinitionsIn this
standard—“marine surveyor”means a person
who surveys a ship or part of a ship.“partofaship”meansasectionofthehull,bulkhead,deck,superstructure or
machinery (including propulsion, associated systemsand
electrical) of a ship.“regulation”meanstheTransportOperations(MarineSafety)Regulation1995.“ship
builder”means a person who builds a ship or part of
a ship.“ship designer”means a person
who designs a ship or part of a ship.

standardThepurposeofthisstandardistostatehowapersonqualifiesforaccreditationasashipdesigner,shipbuilderormarinesurveyorundersection 241of the regulation.5Knowledge of obligations under Act,
regulation and standards(1)A person who
wants to be accredited as a ship designer, ship builderor
marine surveyor must know about—(a)the
obligations imposed on the person by becoming accreditedby
the Act and the regulation; and(b)the
requirements of the appropriate standards.(2)Sections 6 to 8 set out additional
requirements for each accreditation.6Ship
designers—specific requirements(1)A
person who wants to be accredited as a ship designer must
have—(a)at least 10 years experience;
or(b)at least 5 years experience and 1 of
the following qualifications—(i)a
degree in naval architecture;(ii)an
engineering degree with a major in naval architecture;(iii)adiploma,associatediplomaorcertificateinnavalarchitecture;(iv)other
qualifications the person satisfies the chief executiveareequivalentto,orbetterthan,thequalificationsmentioned in
subparagraphs (i) to (iii).(2) A person who
wants to be accredited as a ship designer for part of aship
must have—(a)1 of the following
qualifications—(i)a trade qualification as an
electrician;1Section 24 (Accreditation as a ship
designer, builder or marine surveyor) of theregulation

qualification as a marine fitter;(iii)other
qualifications the person satisfies the chief executiveare
equivalent to, or better than the qualifications mentionedin
subparagraphs (i) and (ii); and(b)at
least 2 years post qualification experience.(3)In
this section—“experience”means—(a)appropriateexperiencewithdemonstratedcompetenceindesigningshipsofthecategoryforwhichtheaccreditationissought; or(b)a
combination of—(i)appropriateexperiencewithdemonstratedcompetenceindesigning ships, or parts of ships, of
the category for whichthe accreditation is sought;
and(ii)appropriateexperiencewithdemonstratedcompetenceinbuilding ships, or parts of ships, of
the category for whichthe accreditation is sought.7Ship builders—specific
requirements(1)A person who wants to be accredited as
a ship builder must have—(a)at least 10 years
experience; or(b)at least 5 years experience and 1 of
the following qualifications—(i)a
certificate in shipbuilding;(ii)trade
qualifications as a boat builder;(iii)trade
qualifications as a shipwright;(iv)othertradequalificationsthepersonsatisfiesthechiefexecutive are
equivalent to, or better than, the qualificationsmentioned in subparagraphs (i) to
(iii).(2)A person who wants to be accredited as
a ship builder for part of aship must
have—(a)1 of the following
qualifications—

trade qualification as a marine fitter;(iii)other

building ships, or parts of ships, of the category forwhich
the accreditation is sought.8Marine surveyors—specific
requirements(1)Apersonwhowantstobeaccreditedasamarinesurveyormusthave—(a)at
least 10 years experience; or(b)at
least 5 years experience and 1 of the following
qualifications—(i)a certificate as a class 1 or 2 marine
engineer or master;(ii)a degree in naval architecture;(iii)a degree in
marine engineering;(iv)adiploma,associatediplomaorcertificateinnavalarchitecture or
shipbuilding;(v)trade qualifications as a shipwright
or boat builder;(vi)othereducational,seagoingortradequalificationsthepersonsatisfiesthechiefexecutiveareequivalentto,orbetterthan,thequalificationsmentionedinsubparagraphs (i) to (v).(2)A person who wants to be accredited as
a marine surveyor for part ofa ship must
have—(a)a trade qualification as an
electrician; and(b)at least 2 years post qualification
experience.

section—“experience”meansappropriateexperiencewithdemonstratedcompetence in

expires 7 years after its commencement.
