Queensland Coast Islands Act 1879Queensland Coast Islands Act 1879[as
amended by all amendments that commenced on or before 5 December
1994]An Act to provide that certain islands in
Torres Straits and lyingbetweenthecontinentofAustraliaandtheislandofNewGuineashallbecomepartoftheColonyofQueenslandandsubject to the laws in force thereinPreamble—ScheduleWhereas by
letters patent under the great seal of the UnitedKingdom of Great Britain and Ireland bearing
date the 10thOctober in the 42nd year of the reign of Her
Majesty QueenVictoria Her said Majesty did authorise the
Governor for thetimebeingoftheColonyofQueenslandbyproclamationunder the
Governor’s hand and the public seal of the Colonyto
declare that from and after a day to be therein mentionedcertainislandswhicharedescribedinthescheduleheretoshould be annexed to and form part of the
said Colony.AndinthesaidletterspatentitwasprovidedthatthesaidGovernor is not
to issue such proclamation as aforesaid untiltheLegislatureofthesaidColonyshallhavepassedalawprovidingthatthesaidislandsshallonthedayaforesaidbecomepartofthesaidColonyandsubjecttothelawsinforce therein.Andinthesaidletterspatentitwasalsoprovidedthattheapplicationofthesaidlawstothesaidislandsmightbemodified either by such proclamation
as aforesaid or by anylaw or laws to be from time to time
passed by the LegislatureofthisColonyfortheGovernmentofthesaidislandssoannexed.Andwhereasitisdesirablethatthesaidislandsshallbeannexed to and form part of the said Colony

under the Governor’shand and the public seal of the Colony
